Captiva
Island's Intriguing History
Captiva's history is a captivating story starting
with the aggressive Calusa Indians who thrived
on the natural resources of Captiva and Useppa
islands for nearly 2000 years. Through a series
of bloody battles, the tribe was nearly eliminated
by gold hungry Spaniards. Eventually this region
became a popular spot for refuge from severe weather,
attracting tall-masted schooners and pirate ships.
Rousing pirates used the island to repair war
ravaged ships, buried secret stores of treasures
beneath the island's white sandy shores and held
beautiful women as their captives. Hence the island
came to be known as Captiva. |
